How You Can
Help Your Child
- Reward your
children for good behavior. Your affection and respect will make
them feel good about themselves and the choices they make, and
this will make it easier for them to resist temptation.
- Be a good
role model. If your children see you using drugs, drinking in
excess or engaging in risky behavior, they are unlikely to listen
to advice to abstain.
- Help your
children deal with peer pressure. Even responsible children can
be tempted to experiment. Role-play resistance strategies with
your child.
- Know where
your children go and who their friends are.
- Educate yourself
about drugs and alcohol abuse.
- Know which
drugs are popular with the "in crowd."
- Tell your
children the facts about drug and alcohol abuse and its harmful
effects even to first-time users.
- Learn the
warning signs of someone who has been using drugs or alcohol.
- Talk to others.
Some of these warning signs may also be signs of other physical
and mental problems. Talk to your healthcare providers about appropriate
treatment. Talk to your family pastor, the school social
worker, and other professionals who can offer help.
